01 · About Saltbox

We roast
every Monday.
Here’s how.

Saltbox has roasted coffee in Park City, Utah since 2018. One roast day, one ship day, and the roast date and farm on every bag. This is the roaster, and the care behind each batch.

02 · Our story

Roasting in Park City, Utah, since 2018.

Saltbox exists for one reason: coffee should taste like it was roasted this week, because it was.

Beans from the store can sit on a shelf for a long time before you open them. By then the sweet, bright flavours have faded, and the cup tastes old and flat.

So we built our whole week around freshness. We roast on Monday. We ship on Tuesday. And every bag carries its roast date and the farm it came from, so you never have to guess.

03 · The Monday roast

The Monday roast, step by step.

Monday is roast day. Here’s what happens between a sack of raw coffee and the bag on your counter, in plain words.

01Monday

Weigh the green coffee

Green coffee is the raw bean, before any heat. It smells more like grass than coffee. We weigh out each batch before the roaster warms up.

02Monday

Into the drum

The beans tumble in a hot iron drum. Slowly they turn from green to gold to brown, and the flavour starts to build.

03Monday

Listen for first crack

First crack is a pop, a bit like popcorn. It’s the sound of beans opening up in the heat, and it tells us the roast is nearly done.

04Monday

Drop and cool

When the roast is right, the beans pour into the cooling tray. Cooling them fast stops the roast exactly where we want it.

05Monday

Bag and label

Each bag gets its roast date and the name of its farm. That’s our promise, written down where you can see it.

06Tuesday

Out the door

On Tuesday, the bags ship across the US. Roasted Monday, shipped Tuesday, so your beans reach you fresh.

04 · On every bag

The roast date and the farm, on every bag.

Turn a Saltbox bag over and you’ll find two things a lot of coffee won’t tell you.

  1. The roast date

The day your beans came out of the roaster. Coffee tastes brighter and sweeter when it’s fresh, and the date shows you exactly how fresh yours is. No guessing.

  2. The farm

Where your coffee was grown. Coffee is a crop, like grapes or apples, and the place it grows shapes how it tastes in your cup.
